Abstract:
I give an outline of the theoretical reasons and experimental evidence for quantized vortices in neutral superfluids and in superconductors. Recent work on vortices in clusters of trapped atoms has given new life to this subject. Although the basic theory applicable to the simplest superfluids was fully developed before 1970, and most of the key experiments had been done, some surprising uncertainties and ambiguities survived. I discuss briefly two such problems on which we have worked recently, the transverse force due to normal fluid flow past a superfluid vortex, and the inertial properties of a quantized vortex.
