University of Michigan" Particle physics today -- what might Dirac think?"
Date: Monday, January 24, 2005
55 Roessler
Time: 4:10 pm.
Abstract:
Paul Dirac was one of the most innovative and influential physicists of the 20th century. He had strong views on how to do and judge physics. Asking how Dirac would view the progress in particle physics of the second half of the 20th century provides an interesting and instructive perspective on its developments. The talk describes and discusses the Standard Model of particle physics and its supersymmetric extension, the change from renormalization as a fundamental issue to the "effective theory" approach, and concludes with a mention of string theory.
